As a child, Debra Hand studied ballet dancing. She was always greatly impressed by the powerful presence of the seasoned dancers in the troupe. "I spent my Saturdays, surrounded by all of these powerful human forms; forms sculpted by intense training and the determination to reach the pinnacles of human ability. Through my little 5 year old perspective, they all seemed to be 20 feet tall as they twirled themselves around the room, hopping from toe to toe, in those magical shoes. I idolized the dancers from my little awkward place in the children’s group and dreamed of the day that I would get a pair of toe shoes." says Hand. As a sculptor, Debra Hand channels her child-hood interpretations of a dancer’s prowess, into exquisite figurative images that reflect power, grace and poise.
"My dance sculptures are not just about the art-form of dance…moreover, they are a study of those singular moments in the dancer’s experience that -- in my mind -- simultaneously reflect the power, grace and beauty of a dancer. It is the dancer’s utter mastery over the body that I am trying to tell the story of."
